Rutland Climate Change Consultation Event

Sustainable Land Trust

Press Release For immediate release

18th November 2019

Climate change consultation event A consultation event is being held at Voluntary Action Rutland on 28th November at 7pm to 9pm to identify climate change priorities in Rutland. The Sustainable Land Trust are leading the event with the aim to bring together residents, young people, community groups, schools, parish councils, allotment holders, farmers and landowners, and businesses who are interested in how we can use our land to reduce the impacts of climate change. This follows on from the announcement recently by Rutland County Council who are aiming to develop a county wide Climate Change Partnership Group. This consultation will help to inform how we use our land and open spaces to meet our net-zero carbon footprint before 2050. The topics for focus within this consultation are carbon storage (in our trees, soils and grasslands, natural areas, parks and open spaces), flooding, food production and waste avoidance, and renewable energy production. Kate Hiseman, CEO of the Sustainable Land Trust stays that 'Rutland is lucky to have beautiful landscapes and a vast range of natural and heritage features that are important to every one of us. Our consultation will ask people about what they are already doing to tackle climate change – this could be for example in school playgrounds, villages, or on farms or estates. We also aim to gather ideas, identify priorities, and create a vision for the county in how we could manage our land in the future.' This information will be used to create a stakeholder group where we can stimulate investment and funding into the county to put in place actions that will make a difference. We are keen to hear from as many people as possible, so if you cannot join the meeting, please download our consultation questionnaire and email it back to us. Copies of the questionnaire will also be available at the Council Office in Oakham, and in the libraries in Oakham, Uppingham, Ketton and Ryhall. The final date for consultation questionnaire responses will be 6th December 2019. For more information on Rutland County Council's plans to tackle climate change see their news page 'Council Approves Targets to Help Fight Climate Change'. For more information on the work of the Sustainable Land Trust and to download a questionnaire, see www.sltrust.org.uk.
